5 great reasons to keep biking all year round…
In the UK, the weather has started to get a little wetter and colder, making it tempting to put your bike in the garage until next year. But if you’ve never ridden through Autumn and Winter, then you might not appreciate that it actually has some benefits for you and your riding:
- 1. Keep your skills sharp: Get back on a bike in Spring after a break and you’ll spend the first few days and weeks of good weather readjusting to two wheels. But if you keep on riding through the Winter months, you’ll be set to get out and make the most of any days of good weather - and that includes the occasional sunny day.
There are few times to enjoy the roads as much as a dry, sunny Christmas day when most people are at home in front of the TV. - 2. Get a warm glow avoiding traffic jams: Being stuck in traffic in your car isn’t any less frustrating in Winter. And riding past a queue of cars can give you a warm, smug glow that will last a long while.
- 3. Buying a Winter Hack: Buying a Winter bike can be a lot of fun. When you’re not fussed about the latest machinery, and you’re browsing for something just to last a while, you can take a risk on something a bit different.
Ride a sportsbike? Why not use a cruiser in winter? Normally ride a tourer? What about a dirt bike? Not only might you end up attached to your Winter transport, but now’s the time to pick up a cheap bike before they all get turned into cafe racers in Shoreditch. You only need a sound engine and electrics, so don’t worry about the bodywork too much! - 4. Build up your biking tales: Never ridden around the world, raced in MotoGP or owned a show standard bike? Who cares - if you ride through Winter, you’re immediately able to feel superior to everyone who sat it out, and even the commute to work will keep you in interesting motorcycling stories for months.
- 5. Winter kit has never been better or cheaper: All-weather textile riding kit improves every year, and while the technology keeps getting better at making sure you’re warm and dry, the prices keep improving too. How else could we offer a Spada Waterproof Package which includes a helmet, jacket, trousers, gloves and boots - all for just £300? (And throw in a kit bag to keep it all in).
Don’t forget if you are intending for your winter bike to last more than one season, you’ll need to regularly rinse it and clean it to remove road salt before it devours your motorcycle. Fortunately the right bike cleaning kit makes that easier. And remember you’ll need a clear visor most of the time - many of the helmets we sell have an integral sun visor to make it even easier to ride in all conditions.
